Principal Designer
CDM 2015

Ensuring CDM Compliance

When a construction project involves multiple contractors (including sub-contractors), the client must appoint a CDM Principal Designer in writing, or take on the role themselves. This role oversees the planning, management, and monitoring of the pre-construction phase, ensuring health and safety risks are minimized where reasonably practical.

If the client does not appoint a Principal Designer, they are responsible for fulfilling these duties themselves

Our CDM Principal Designer Role includes the following:

  • Request and review any existing pre-construction information provided by the client.
  • Collate and evaluate of any existing building information and advise the client of any gaps.
  • Collaborate with the design team to identify and record any design-related health and safety risks associated with the project using a design risk register.
  • Organise and chair design risk workshops to discuss any design risks and evaluate how the designers have used the 'Principles of Prevention' to mitigate or reduce risk.
  • Ensure that all access for maintenance requirements are considered and that a strategy is provided to the client by the designers.
  • Ensure that all relevant pre-construction information is provided by the client to the design team and principal contractor, and produce an overarching document identifying any residual health and safety risks and other relevant project information
  • Appraisal of the construction phase plan prior to any construction works being carried out.
  • Preparing and submitting the F10 notification to the HSE if applicable.
  • Agree on the format of the health and safety file with the client and ensure that it is prepared to provide suitable information for anyone carrying out subsequent construction work on the building to plan and execute the work safely and without health risks.
